BREAKING: Cubs Could Get Major Pitching Boost as Two Key Arms Near Potential Returns

There are still two major uncertainties when projecting what the Chicago Cubs’ pitching staff could look like in the postseason: Justin Steele and Ben Brown. Both pitchers could become important pieces down the stretch, but the Cubs should not count on either one being available.

Steele is still working his way back, with his recovery previously slowed by a flexor strain. If everything goes according to plan, he could potentially begin a minor-league rehab assignment by the end of August. Even if that happens, however, his return to the Cubs would likely come closer to the beginning of October rather than the first week or two of September.

Brown, meanwhile, has consistently been expected to return at some point this season. The 26-year-old recently resumed his throwing program, although the Cubs were initially focused on making sure he could string together symptom-free days. His progression appeared to take another step forward Friday when he threw a bullpen session at Wrigley Field.

Ben Brown could give the Cubs another valuable bullpen option in October

Brown’s last appearance came June 19 before he was placed on the injured list with a stress reaction in his neck. It was similar to the injury that cut his 2024 season short. As part of his latest recovery, the Cubs have worked to determine whether mechanical adjustments could help Brown continue pitching while reducing the risk of another recurrence.

The Cubs have not provided many specifics about what, if any, mechanical changes Brown has made. Still, his return to bullpen work is an encouraging indication that his recovery is progressing. With Edward Cabrera expected back this weekend, the Cubs already have enough starters to form a six-man rotation, making a bullpen role the most likely destination for Brown once he is cleared to return.

That could ultimately be a positive problem for Chicago. One of the Cubs’ biggest shortcomings last October was a lack of reliable pitching depth to round out the postseason staff. This time around, they could have considerably more options.

In addition to potential returns from Brown and Steele, Hunter Harvey and Shelby Miller could also be available for the postseason. Several of the Cubs’ starting pitchers could potentially shift into relief roles once October arrives as well.

That kind of pitching depth is exactly what Jed Hoyer and the Cubs have been trying to build since the end of last season, and it could prove extremely valuable when the postseason arrives.
