The Texas Rangers have strengthened their bullpen with the return of right-hander, who has been activated from the 15-day injured list after missing time with a left adductor strain.
He was placed on the injured list July 30, retroactive to July 29, and missed 15 games without making a minor league rehab appearance. His return gives Texas another dependable option in the late innings as the club continues its push through the season.
The Rangers recently completed a series against the Athletics, earning a 5-3 victory in their latest meeting. Jakob Junis’ return provides additional depth for a Texas bullpen that will be relied upon heavily during the remainder of the schedule.
The 33-year-old has been one of the Rangers’ most consistent relief pitchers in his first season with the organization. He owns a 1-1 record with five saves, a team-high 14 holds and a 2.70 ERA across 36 appearances, including one start.
Junis has struck out 30 hitters and issued only seven walks over 40 innings. Texas has also enjoyed considerable success when he has taken the mound, going 28-8 in games in which he has appeared.
This is Junis’ second stint on the injured list this season. He previously missed 11 games in July because of a right hip impingement before returning to action.
The Rangers made room for Junis by designating veteran left-hander Marco Gonzales for assignment. Gonzales had been selected from Triple-A Round Rock shortly before the roster move and made an immediate contribution against the Athletics, recording a double-play grounder with his first and only pitch.
Gonzales, 34, appeared in three relief games over two stints with Texas this season. He allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, finishing with a 1.35 ERA and one save.
With Junis back in the fold, Texas adds an experienced and productive arm to its pitching staff at an important point in the season.
