BREAKING: St. Louis Cardinals Demote 25-Year-Old Pitcher During Reds Series

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently facing the Cincinnati Reds in a rare five-game series.

The unusual five-game set is the result of a Monday afternoon makeup game being added to the four-game series that was already scheduled between the Reds and Cardinals. As of Wednesday, St. Louis leads the series 2-1, with two games still remaining.

During the series, particularly with Monday’s doubleheader, the Cardinals made several roster moves.

Following Monday’s game, St. Louis optioned Quinn Mathews to Triple-A.

Mathews had been with the major league club for just one day, appearing during the doubleheader.

The 25-year-old left-hander has made two starts for the Cardinals this season, posting a 3.00 ERA across nine innings while recording 10 strikeouts.

It’s certainly possible that Mathews could be recalled soon for another spot start.

At Triple-A this season, Mathews has posted a 3.27 ERA over 99 innings, along with 120 strikeouts.

As a 25-year-old pitcher in the Cardinals organization who has put together strong minor league numbers, Mathews figures to remain part of the team’s plans for the future.

CBSSports.com’s RotoWire staff wrote on Tuesday, August 18, following the demotion:

“Mathews held the Reds to one run over four innings in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Reds. There’s not currently room for the left-hander in the Cardinals’ rotation, so he’ll return to Memphis for now until another opportunity arises.”
