Colt Emerson was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Before making his MLB debut, Emerson signed a record-breaking extension with the club, with the expectation that he would become a cornerstone of the franchise.
However, the rookie endured a disappointing campaign, and his season has now officially come to an end, per Darragh McDonald.
Emerson will undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist. He was sent to the minors following spring training but still received the extension from Seattle. After being promoted in May, Emerson made his MLB debut against the San Diego Padres on May 17. Unfortunately, the season did not unfold as the Mariners had hoped.
Emerson finished with a .190 batting average, eight home runs, and 23 RBIs. His struggles became especially pronounced in August, when he hit .182 with a .206 on-base percentage. He also struck out in 34.4 percent of his plate appearances at the major league level. During August, Emerson managed just one home run and two RBIs. The Mariners initially planned to send him back to Triple-A, but instead, he was placed on the IL due to wrist inflammation.
Seattle is currently 62-69 on the season, putting the team in third place in the AL West. Although the Mariners are seven games below .500, they remain just three games behind first place, trailing the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. Texas also currently holds the final wild-card spot in the American League.
