The New York Mets fell 8-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night, but the more pressing concern came when star infielder Bo Bichette was forced to leave the game early after fouling a ball off his ankle.
The injury came at an unfortunate time for Bichette, who had recently begun to find his rhythm at the plate. Entering Wednesday’s matchup, he had collected a hit in nine of his previous 11 games.
The Mets later confirmed that Bichette suffered a left foot contusion and underwent X-rays. Interim manager Andy Green offered a positive update after the game, saying the initial results showed no serious damage.
“I think fine,” Green said when asked how Bichette was doing. “He’s got a contusion on his ankle from the foul ball. X-rays were negative. We’ll see where he’s at when he wakes up in the morning. You really know how that is until the next day, but hoping he’s fine.”
Bichette joined the Mets this offseason on a three-year, $126 million contract. In 131 games this season, he is batting .265 with a .393 slugging percentage and a .704 OPS across 521 at-bats. He has also produced 64 runs, 138 hits, 14 home runs and 66 RBIs.
As for the Mets, the team has shown resilience over the past month, but its postseason outlook remains bleak. With 29 regular-season games left and a 60-73 record, New York sits 18 games behind in the NL East and 11.5 games out of a Wild Card position.
The Mets will close their series against Milwaukee on Thursday before returning to New York to begin a series against the Houston Astros on Friday.
