Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn has landed on the IL with a left thumb fracture, but he may not be sidelined for long.
The St. Louis Cardinals entered Wednesday on a four-game losing streak and were also dealing with the loss of one of their key players, as shortstop Masyn Winn was placed on the injured list.
Winn was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to August 22, meaning he could be eligible to return during the Cardinals’ upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The shortstop has put together a solid season, batting .238 with five home runs and 51 RBIs while appearing in 122 games. JJ Wetherholt is expected to move over to shortstop while Winn remains out.
An update on Winn’s status was provided by MLB.com.
“Imaging showed fracture, which primarily impacts Winn when swinging a bat. Expected to miss only the current homestand and return after a minimum stay on the IL,” the update read.
Meanwhile, Nolan Gorman was recalled to the major league roster. He is batting .190 this season with seven home runs and 26 RBIs. Gorman had not been with the big league club since June after hitting just .050 over his first seven games that month. His first game back also proved difficult, as he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Cardinals are now 66-67 and sit third in the NL Central. They are also five games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card race. After Wednesday’s matchup against Baltimore has already been played, St. Louis will turn its attention to the next game as it looks to snap its four-game losing streak.
