According to Sébastien Denis, Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Amadou Onana and his representatives over a new contract. The Belgium international is set to remain at Villa Park for an additional two years, a major boost for the club as it demonstrates their confidence in him while also protecting the midfielder’s transfer value.
The summer transfer window closed on Tuesday evening after another record-breaking period of spending by Premier League clubs. Soaring player valuations and a growing desire to retain valuable assets were among the defining features of the window, with clubs increasingly focused on preserving or increasing the value of their squads.
Aston Villa were frequently at the centre of discussions over their financial position and ability to compete with the established Premier League elite. The club also saw several important players depart, including Youri Tielemans, who moved to Manchester United, leaving Villa with a noticeably weaker squad in certain areas.
Onana had previously been viewed as one of Villa’s most likely high-value sales this summer. The Belgian joined from Everton in 2024 and quickly established himself as an important figure at Villa Park. However, a cruciate ligament injury suffered during the World Cup brought his season to a premature end and effectively ended speculation over a potential transfer.
Amadou Onana agrees new Aston Villa contract
Manchester United were among the clubs previously linked with a move for Onana, but his serious knee injury made a summer departure highly unlikely. Instead, Aston Villa have opted to show their commitment to the midfielder by securing his long-term future.
Villa have now agreed fresh terms with Onana, with his new contract expected to run until 2031. The deal adds two additional years to his previous agreement and could also see the midfielder receive a significant salary increase while he continues his recovery.
Villa also brought in Leon Goretzka earlier in the window as a potential replacement for Onana, particularly given the expectation that the Belgian could miss the entire season. Nevertheless, extending his contract represents a sensible move for the club, allowing Onana to concentrate on his rehabilitation while Villa retain control of one of their most valuable assets beyond 2027 and 2028.
