Aston Villa midfielder Leon Goretzka has confirmed that he will remain out of action until after the upcoming international break as he continues his recovery from an injury setback.
The 31-year-old has yet to make his first appearance for Villa since completing a free transfer to the club last month. His arrival was viewed as a significant addition to Unai Emery’s squad, although Goretzka joined without the benefit of a full pre-season.
Shortly after his move was completed, Emery expressed satisfaction with the midfielder’s physical condition despite his lack of preparation during the summer. However, Goretzka has now revealed that his body struggled to cope with the increased workload following his spell away from competitive football.
In a message to Aston Villa supporters, Goretzka thanked fans for their warm reception while confirming that he needs time away to fully regain his fitness.
“Dear Villans, first of all, thank you for the incredible welcome. After my first few days at this club, the feeling that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be has grown stronger with each passing day.
“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It’s frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength.
“I’ll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully and I’ll be back ready to fight and give everything for you and for Villa. Can’t wait to see you on the pitch soon. Thank you for your support. Leon.”
Villa are still searching for their first win after three matches and will face Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
