Newcastle injury update: Newcastle United suffer fresh injury concerns with Joelinton and Livramento updates

Newcastle United will be without at least four first-team players for their Carabao Cup trip to Millwall, while head coach Matthias Jaissle has confirmed Tino Livramento will not return to the starting XI just yet.

Livramento made his comeback from injury during Newcastle’s 2-2 Premier League draw with AFC Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday, coming off the bench as a late substitute.

The 23-year-old has endured a difficult 2026 campaign due to repeated fitness issues, making only four starts since the beginning of the year. Despite his struggles, he was selected in England’s World Cup squad during the summer before a calf injury suffered shortly before the tournament forced him to withdraw.

The full-back required surgery for the problem, ruling him out of pre-season and Newcastle’s first three matches of the new season. He returned to the matchday squad against Bournemouth and replaced Lewis Hall at left-back to help the Magpies secure a point.

However, Jaissle has urged caution over Livramento’s comeback and admitted the defender is not ready to start against Millwall.

“It is too early to say on Tino. He was partially involved [in training], so we need to be smart with his progress now,” Jaissle said.

“We need to wait until he is 100% ready. He has huge potential, and we can’t wait to have him back.”

Joelinton is also nearing a return from a thigh injury but will not feature against Millwall in the Carabao Cup third round. Dan Burn and William Osula are also unavailable, while goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen will miss the fixture after suffering an ankle injury in training last week.

“Joelinton is out for a couple of weeks,” Jaissle confirmed. “I am really confident that he will be back as soon as possible.”

Although Newcastle are expected to rotate their squad against Championship opposition, Jaissle ruled out Livramento starting the match when asked about the England international’s availability.

“No,” the Newcastle boss replied.

Discussing his team selection, Jaissle added that decisions would be made based on how players recover physically and mentally following their weekend fixture.

“There’s always a fine line to make these decisions,” he said.

“I think it would be smart to wait and know how the lads are responding physically and mentally from that match, and then we have still a couple of days to make that decision. We want to come around further.

“We’re aware of the schedule, also what comes afterwards, but I think the physical level already from the lads is getting better and better.”
