Major TRANSFER BOMBSHELL: Newcastle Strikes Agreement on Signing £50m Striker, He’s Miles Better than Wissa

Newcastle United are reportedly exploring a move for Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi as they assess their attacking options ahead of 2027, with Yoane Wissa struggling to make the expected impact at St James’ Park.

The Magpies secured a crucial Premier League victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, easing some of the pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle after consecutive 4-1 defeats away from home and a disappointing loss against Aston Villa.

However, despite the much-needed win, Newcastle still have significant work to do, particularly in the final third, where their attacking options have struggled to deliver consistently.

Wissa has emerged as a major concern after arriving from Brentford for a reported £55million fee. The DR Congo international was expected to strengthen Newcastle’s forward line following Alexander Isak’s departure, but his performances have so far fallen short of expectations.

The 30-year-old has managed just one goal in eight appearances during the 2026-27 campaign, raising questions about whether he can become the reliable goalscorer Newcastle need.

With the club already considering potential reinforcements, Tresoldi has reportedly emerged as a promising candidate to strengthen their attack.

Yoane Wissa Faces Increasing Pressure at Newcastle

Wissa arrived on Tyneside with an impressive reputation following his productive spell at Brentford.

During the 2024-25 Premier League season, the forward scored 19 goals in 35 appearances, establishing himself among the division’s most effective attacking players.

His performances made him an attractive option for Newcastle, who needed additional firepower to compensate for Isak’s departure.

However, his transition to life at St James’ Park has proved difficult. Wissa has struggled to reproduce the form that made him such a valuable player at Brentford, while his limited goal return has increased scrutiny of Newcastle’s recruitment decisions.

His performances have also raised questions about whether he can offer a significant improvement on Nick Woltemade, another option in the club’s attacking ranks.

At 30, Wissa is an experienced Premier League forward who should be approaching a period of consistency rather than struggling to establish himself.

With a substantial salary and almost three years remaining on his contract, Newcastle must carefully consider his long-term role in the squad.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo could also emerge as a competitor for attacking minutes as he continues adapting to English football. Meanwhile, William Osula’s recent contribution, including his goal against Crystal Palace, has given Jaissle another reason to assess his forward options.

If Wissa cannot improve his performances, Newcastle could decide that recruiting a younger striker is the best way to strengthen their frontline.

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Newcastle have been monitoring Tresoldi’s performances for Club Brugge as they consider potential attacking reinforcements.

The 22-year-old German forward has enjoyed an encouraging start to the campaign in Belgium, attracting attention from several Premier League clubs.

Tresoldi has reportedly scored seven goals in nine Jupiler Pro League appearances this season, building on his 13-goal campaign last term.

His progress has placed him on the radar of clubs seeking a younger center-forward with the potential to develop into a leading goalscorer.

However, Newcastle could face considerable competition for his signature. Chelsea and Manchester City have reportedly been linked with plans to monitor the striker, potentially complicating the Magpies’ pursuit.

Everton has also been associated with an interest in the player, with reports suggesting that Club Brugge could demand approximately £50 million.

The Belgian club are under no immediate pressure to sell after previously securing significant fees for their players. Their reported valuation could therefore make negotiations difficult for Newcastle.

Nevertheless, Tresoldi’s age, versatility, and recent scoring record could make him an attractive long-term investment.

Why Tresoldi Could Be an Upgrade on Wissa

The contrasting performances of Wissa and Tresoldi provide a compelling reason for Newcastle to consider a change in their attacking options.

Wissa has scored just once in eight appearances this season, despite starting seven matches and missing four significant scoring opportunities.

Tresoldi, meanwhile, has reportedly registered seven league goals in nine appearances for Club Brugge, demonstrating a greater return in front of goal during the opening stages of the campaign.

The German forward also scored 13 goals last season, suggesting that his recent performances could represent continued development rather than a temporary improvement.

His physical presence and mobility could make him suitable for Newcastle’s attacking system, while his ability to operate across the frontline would give Jaissle additional tactical flexibility.

There are, however, reasons for caution. Tresoldi has also missed six big chances this season, highlighting that his finishing is not without flaws.

Furthermore, success in the Belgian league does not automatically guarantee that a player will reproduce the same numbers in the Premier League, where the intensity and quality of opposition are different.

Wissa also retains an advantage in physical duels. He reportedly wins 5.8 duels per game in the Premier League, compared with Tresoldi’s average of just under four in Belgium.

That suggests Newcastle would need to assess more than just their respective goal returns before deciding whether the younger striker represents a genuine upgrade.

Newcastle Must Get Their Next Striker Signing Right

Newcastle’s reported interest in Tresoldi reflects the need to strengthen their attacking options as they plan for the future.

Although Wissa could still rediscover his best form, his disappointing start has raised legitimate concerns about whether he can consistently deliver the goals required at St James’ Park.

Tresoldi offers the attraction of youth, improving performances, and a potentially significant long-term future, but his reported £50 million price tag would represent a major financial commitment.

With other Premier League clubs also monitoring the forward, Newcastle may need to move decisively if they intend to pursue a deal in 2027.

Ultimately, the Magpies must identify a striker capable of improving their attacking output while fitting Jaissle’s tactical approach.

If Wissa cannot rediscover his Brentford form, Tresoldi could emerge as a serious alternative, although Newcastle will need to weigh his potential against the substantial transfer fee and the risks associated with recruiting from another league.
