Malick Fofana Reveals Why He Snubbed Crystal Palace for £31m Sunderland Move After Régis Le Bris Promise

Malick Fofana has opened up about the dramatic circumstances surrounding his deadline-day transfer to Sunderland, revealing how manager Régis Le Bris and the club’s determination to secure his services convinced him to choose Wearside over Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

The Belgian winger completed a move from Lyon worth an initial £26 million, with the deal potentially rising to approximately £31 million through performance-related add-ons.

However, Sunderland faced a serious battle to land the highly rated attacker, with Crystal Palace making a late attempt to hijack the agreement on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Palace manager Pierre Sage had previously worked with Fofana during their time at Lyon, giving the Eagles additional motivation to pursue a reunion with the 21-year-old.

Both Premier League clubs reportedly reached agreements with Lyon, while reports of two private jets waiting at Lyon airport highlighted the extraordinary nature of the transfer negotiations.

Sunderland eventually emerged victorious following a late intervention from owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who travelled to France in an attempt to ensure the deal was completed before the deadline.

Interestingly, Fofana has revealed that he was not particularly worried about the uncertainty surrounding his future, spending much of the dramatic transfer day relaxing at home.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, the winger explained that although negotiations were progressing back and forth, he remained calm while waiting for the final outcome.

He admitted that moving to a new country and joining a Premier League club was naturally a significant decision but insisted that he never allowed the transfer uncertainty to overwhelm him.

He also highlighted his conversations with Le Bris, explaining that the Sunderland manager played a significant role in convincing him that the Stadium of Light was the right destination for his development.

According to Fofana, the manager presented an ambitious project that matched his personal expectations, making the decision to move to Wearside relatively straightforward.

The winger also confirmed that he held a telephone conversation with Louis-Dreyfus during the negotiations.

Although they did not meet face-to-face before the transfer was completed, the Sunderland owner explained the club’s ambitions and reinforced the message that they genuinely wanted him.

Fofana acknowledged that he is still developing as a footballer and believes consistent opportunities will help him improve his game and gain valuable Premier League experience.

He also expressed satisfaction with the manager’s tactical vision, explaining that the project presented during their discussions suited his ambitions.

The promise of meaningful playing time could prove particularly important as Fofana looks to establish himself in English football and justify Sunderland’s substantial financial investment.

Despite experiencing a challenging start to life in the Premier League, Fofana insists that he has already developed a strong connection with Sunderland.

The Belgian revealed that the reception he received from supporters and people around the club made him feel comfortable from the beginning.

He expressed happiness with his decision to join the Black Cats and insisted that he is enjoying his new surroundings.

For Sunderland, securing Fofana’s signature represents an important statement of ambition, particularly after beating competition from Crystal Palace to complete the transfer.
