The St. Louis Cardinals have taken an important step in reshaping their front office by appointing 34-year-old Rob Cerfolio as the club’s new general manager. The decision reflects the organization’s confidence in his leadership abilities and his contributions to player development and performance. Cerfolio’s promotion comes as the Cardinals look to rebuild their competitiveness following several disappointing seasons.
The Cardinals officially announced Cerfolio’s promotion on Friday. He previously served as the team’s assistant general manager, focusing on player development and performance over the past three seasons. In his new position, he will report directly to president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
Bloom praised Cerfolio’s dedication, highlighting his significant contributions to improving the organization’s player development system and strengthening the performance department. He also recognized Cerfolio’s commitment to building strong relationships with both newly appointed employees and experienced members of the organization.
The appointment follows the departure of Randy Flores, who left the Cardinals on Monday after spending 11 years with the franchise. Flores had served as assistant general manager for the previous eight seasons, overseeing amateur and professional player acquisitions.
Before joining St. Louis, Cerfolio spent a decade with the Cleveland Guardians, gradually advancing through the organization before becoming its director of player development in his final three years. Originally from Indian Springs, Alabama, he will remain in St. Louis despite reportedly attracting interest from several organizations for other front-office positions.
The Cardinals are coming off a difficult 2025 campaign, finishing fourth in the National League Central with a 77-85 record and missing the postseason for the fourth consecutive year.
A Yale graduate, Cerfolio has also been credited with helping develop the team’s emerging young talent, including outfielder Jordan Walker and second baseman JJ Wetherholt. His appointment signals the Cardinals’ intention to strengthen their development system and build a more competitive team for the future.
