Everton could be preparing to strengthen their attacking options during the January transfer window, with Chelsea winger emerging as a potential target. The Toffees are reportedly monitoring the 22-year-old’s situation at Stamford Bridge, where limited playing opportunities have raised questions about his future and opened the door to a possible loan departure.
He has struggled to establish himself in Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea squad this season, making just two appearances across all competitions. Neither outing has come in the Premier League, with the England Under-21 international featuring exclusively in the Carabao Cup.
The winger has also been unavailable since suffering an ankle injury in mid-October, although he is expected to return to action following the upcoming international break.
Chelsea brought the Reading-born attacker to West London from Borussia Dortmund in July 2025 for a reported £48.5 million. However, he has yet to justify that investment, managing just one goal in 29 appearances for the club.
With his opportunities limited, a January loan move is increasingly being considered, and Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium has been mentioned as a possible destination.
According to TeamTalk, Everton are “considering a January loan deal” for the Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, with three other Premier League sides also understood to have contacted the Blues to register their interest.
Chelsea are reportedly “prepared to sanction a temporary departure”, although the London club appear reluctant to consider a permanent transfer because of the player’s long-term potential.
Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Sunderland are believed to be among Everton’s domestic competitors, while Roma, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are also monitoring the situation.
Palace could face an additional complication, having already taken Axel Disasi on loan from Chelsea. This means they may need to renegotiate the terms of that arrangement before being able to bring Gittens to Selhurst Park on a temporary basis.
Nevertheless, with several clubs reportedly involved in the race, Everton supporters should approach the speculation with some caution.
From Chelsea’s perspective, allowing Gittens to spend the second half of the campaign elsewhere could be beneficial. Regular first-team football would provide an opportunity for the 22-year-old to develop, while also reducing the wage commitment for the remainder of the season.
Everton Could Have an Advantage in the Race
One potential factor in Everton’s favour could be their existing relationship with Chelsea.
The Blues have been linked with an interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, although David Moyes is unlikely to consider losing one of his most important defenders simply to help facilitate a loan move for an inexperienced Premier League winger.
However, Everton’s previous dealings involving Tyrique George could provide a useful example of how a temporary arrangement between the clubs might work.
George impressed sufficiently during his spell on Merseyside to persuade Everton to complete a reported £24 million permanent transfer in the summer. That experience could encourage Chelsea to view Goodison Park’s successors as a suitable destination for another young attacker.
Should Gittens arrive, Everton would be bringing in a player with considerable potential and plenty to prove.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Liam Rosenior described the winger as an “outstanding player” when speaking to Chelsea’s official website.
Gittens also received glowing praise from former Borussia Dortmund teammate Karim Adeyemi following his breakthrough campaign in 2024-25.
“He has no fear. For me, he is one of the best players one-against-one I have ever seen, to be honest. He will be a really good player,” Adeyemi said.
Could He Be the Right Signing for Moyes?
One potential obstacle highlighted by TeamTalk is Jack Grealish’s future at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Both players operate in similar positions, meaning Everton’s decision to pursue Gittens could depend on whether Grealish remains part of Moyes’ plans.
There are also questions about whether the Chelsea youngster fits the profile of a typical Moyes signing.
Is he the kind of player Moyes usually prefers? Probably not.
Is strengthening the left-wing position Everton’s most urgent priority? Certainly not.
However, Gittens could still bring something different to Everton’s attacking play. His pace, direct dribbling and ability to take on defenders could provide an additional attacking dimension that the Toffees would benefit from.
At just 22, he also has considerable room for improvement. A loan spell away from Chelsea could give him the regular football needed to rediscover his confidence and demonstrate why the London club invested so heavily in him.
With a point to prove and a desire to secure more playing time, Gittens could represent an interesting opportunity for Everton if the conditions of a January deal are favourable.
