In 2024, there was nothing that could save the New York Giants. Not a new quarterback, not a running back, not even a miracle.
By mid-season, the Giants realized this and made the decision to release former first-round pick Daniel Jones, fully committing to a tanking strategy for the No. 1 overall pick. Around that time, they also chose to start third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito over backup Drew Lock, who had previously started for the Denver Broncos.
Now, according to a report from The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Duggar and Cale Clinton, Lock is returning to the Seattle Seahawks after spending one year in New York. The Broncos had traded Lock to Seattle as part of the deal for quarterback Russell Wilson in March 2022.
From The Athletic: “Lock is the Seahawks’ second quarterback addition this offseason. In March, they signed former Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million deal. They also have former Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell on the roster.”
Lock Cost Giants No. 1 Overall Pick in 2025 NFL Draft
Lock ended up starting the last five games of the season for the Giants after DeVito got injured. He posted a 1-4 record. The Giants finished tied with the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns for the worst record in the NFL at 3-14, with the Titans securing the No. 1 pick due to a strength of schedule tiebreaker.
If not for Lock’s standout performance in a 45-33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17, the Giants would have had the No. 1 pick and likely selected University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
Lock, who went 8-13 as a starter with the Broncos from 2019 to 2021, has a career record of 10-18. In Seattle, he was in the running to start in 2022 but lost the job to Geno Smith.
“Lock, now 28, played a key role in preventing the Giants from securing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft,” wrote CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani on April 11. “In Week 17, Lock threw for 309 yards, four touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown in the Giants’ 45-33 upset win over the Colts.”
Decision to Start DeVito Over Lock Ridiculed
The Decision to Start DeVito Over Lock Draws Criticism Lock was understandably confused after being passed over in favor of DeVito, but handled the situation with professionalism.
“That’s a question I might still have for myself,” Lock said to the media. “I was told I’d be QB2. It’s an interesting situation. Not much I can really say, except I’m still here for him, and we’re still good friends, believe it or not. I’m here to support him. The team needs to get a win, and once we start winning, things will get better.”
Since 2017, the Giants have had just one winning season.
“… The sense I’ve gotten from multiple sources — players, coaches, and executives — is that the issues within the organization go far beyond just one person,” said FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz on November 19.
