Breaking News: Cardinals Confirms Intriguing Decision on Major Triple-A Reliever

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that reliever, a 2024 Texas League All-Star, has been called up from Triple-A Memphis. In a corresponding move, the team optioned right-hander Roddery Muñoz back to Memphis. Muñoz appeared in three games since his call-up, allowing three runs over 2 2/3 innings pitched.

Veteran star, acquired by the Cardinals in 2023 as part of the trade that sent Paul DeJong to the Toronto Blue Jays, has officially been called up to the majors. The 26-year-old reliever has posted a 1.59 ERA in four appearances with Triple-A Memphis this season. Last year, he shined as the closer for Double-A Springfield, going a perfect 27-for-27 in save opportunities — the most in the Texas League — while giving up just 19 earned runs over 63 2/3 innings (2.69 ERA).

Svanson, a 13th-round pick, has put together a strong minor league résumé, earning All-Star honors in each of the past two seasons. Over his career, he’s logged a 2.98 ERA across 220 2/3 innings, racking up 43 saves in 45 chances over 137 games. His debut will mark the first tangible return the Cardinals have seen from the DeJong trade. Since that deal, DeJong has bounced between five MLB teams, while Svanson has steadily risen through the Cardinals’ system.

MLB.com’s John Denton reported that Svanson learned of his call-up during the eighth inning of Memphis’s game last night. He’ll have four family members in the stands for his potential big-league debut. Already on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster after being added this past offseason, Svanson was a natural choice to reinforce a bullpen in need of depth.
