SAD NEWS: Michigan State Part Ways With Another Top Veteran Star

Michigan State University announced that it is parting ways with top veteran, with his final day set for May 11. In the interim, longtime men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo and deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith will jointly serve as co-interim athletic directors as the school begins its search for a permanent replacement.

Izzo, a Hall of Fame coach who has led the Spartans since 1995, is one of the most respected figures in college athletics. He has guided Michigan State to eight Final Fours, a national championship in 2000, and has amassed 737 career victories. Smith, a 23-year veteran of the department, has played key roles in compliance, governance, and administrative leadership.

University president Kevin M. Guskiewicz emphasized that this is a critical juncture for college athletics, underscoring the need for strong leadership. A formal search process for Haller’s successor is expected to begin soon.

Haller’s tenure was marked by major decisions, including the firing of football coach Mel Tucker following misconduct allegations and the high-profile hiring of Jonathan Smith as Tucker’s replacement. His departure comes amid ongoing litigation tied to Tucker’s dismissal.
