When Auburn football added veteran star from the transfer portal, the raw talent was never in question. After a rocky stint at Oklahoma, Arnold returned to the SEC, where head coach Hugh Freeze initially approached things with some caution.
Despite facing stiff competition this spring, he didn’t back down—and that left a strong impression on Freeze.
“He just needed a fresh start for whatever reason,” Freeze told On3 Sports. “But I’m really encouraged by what I’ve seen. He’s got the arm, the legs, the IQ. What he needed was confidence, and I think that grew this spring along with his chemistry with our receivers.
“Still, you don’t fully regain that swagger until you get into real games and start winning. But I feel good about what I’ve seen from both him and Deuce so far.”
As Auburn prepares to make a key decision at quarterback, it’s a positive dilemma to have. For Arnold, the new setting may be just what he needed to turn potential into production.
Can Auburn football succeed with Jackson Arnold?
That’s a fair concern. Jackson Arnold’s struggles at Oklahoma—despite their elite defense—highlight a key point: great quarterback play can’t be manufactured by surroundings alone. At OU, Arnold was thrown into a tough situation after Dillon Gabriel’s departure, and the offense lacked rhythm, identity, and consistent protection. The result? A promising QB looked overwhelmed, and the team underachieved.

The question for Auburn is whether that same pattern could repeat. Here’s what works in Auburn’s favor—and what could work against them:
✅ Why Auburn Might Be Different
-
Stability in scheme: Hugh Freeze and offensive coordinator Derrick Nix have spent the offseason installing a more quarterback-friendly system with simpler reads and more RPOs—something Arnold thrives in.
-
Improved WR rapport: Unlike in Norman, Arnold has had a full spring to build chemistry with his receivers. That wasn’t the case at OU.
-
Supportive environment: Freeze seems committed to building Arnold’s confidence instead of yanking him after one mistake. That kind of leash matters for a young QB.
-
Competent competition: Deuce Wallace pushing Arnold could sharpen him rather than unseat him, creating a healthy QB room.
❌ What Could Still Go Wrong
-
Offensive line questions: Auburn’s O-line is still a work in progress. If they can’t keep Arnold upright, the offense will struggle regardless of his tools.
-
Unproven receivers: While chemistry is improving, this isn’t an overly experienced or elite WR group. Can they win on their own and help their QB out?
-
The SEC gauntlet: There’s no easing into things. The speed and aggression of SEC defenses are unforgiving. If Arnold starts slow, confidence could erode quickly.
So yes—what happened at OU could happen again. But Auburn seems to be handling Arnold differently, giving him a better platform to succeed.
