Brent Pry’s first three seasons at Virginia Tech have certainly had their share of highs and lows. Expectations were high heading into Year 3, especially after retaining much of the roster last spring, but despite boasting several NFL-caliber players, the Hokies failed to take the next step forward.
While Pry has faced criticism, one area where he’s undeniably succeeded is in the transfer portal. He’s consistently brought talented players back to Virginia and added depth to the roster—often pulling talent from within the conference. The next challenge is turning that portal success into consistent results on the field during the season.
Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry continues off-season roster-building success, plucking an ACC linebacker
Virginia Tech secured two key commitments in quick succession. South Florida transfer Immanuel Hickman and North Carolina linebacker and special teams contributor Michael Short both announced their decisions to join the Hokies, adding valuable depth to the roster. Hickman continues the trend of in-state additions, while Short marks another ACC player transferring to Blacksburg.
Short’s decision came as a bit of a surprise, as he chose the Hokies over Rutgers and Pittsburgh—exactly the kind of recruiting battle Virginia Tech needs to keep winning. He recorded 23 tackles for UNC in 2024 and was a significant presence on special teams. Under new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes, Short is expected to have a real opportunity to earn playing time.

Originally a three-star prospect from the Charlotte area, Short earned a 75 defensive grade from PFF last season and adds another solid option for the Hokies at linebacker in 2025.
