Unexpected Deal: Kings’ Shocking Trade Sends Six-Time All-Star to Rival

The Sacramento Kings are gearing up for a busy 2025 offseason and have already started making significant changes. They’ve brought in a new general manager, Scott Perry, and an assistant general manager, BJ Armstrong, with more moves still expected.

Sacramento is overhauling its coaching staff, most notably by hiring Doug Christie as their new head coach and allowing him to bring in his own assistants. With these front office and coaching changes, many are wondering how much the roster will be reshaped.

One major trade candidate for the Kings this offseason is six-time All-Star, whose future in Sacramento appears uncertain.

“I’m heading into my 17th season, and that’s the reality,” he said after their season-ending loss in the play-in tournament. “At this point in my career, there aren’t many chances left to compete in the playoffs. That’s all you really want—just a shot at it and see what happens.”

“It’s probably the most I’ve experienced in my 16-year career. The season we had was a lot. It’s hard to process right now.”

If DeRozan were to be traded, where might he end up? ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel proposed a four-team NBA mock trade that sends DeRozan to the New Orleans Pelicans, with the Utah Jazz and Milwaukee Bucks also involved.

Here’s the breakdown of the trade:

  • Milwaukee Bucks receive: G CJ McCollum, G Svi Mykhailiuk
  • New Orleans Pelicans receive: F DeMar DeRozan, MIL 2026 1st-round pick (NOP already has the rights to swap)
  • Sacramento Kings receive: G Collin Sexton, G Jordan Clarkson
  • Utah Jazz receive: F Kyle Kuzma, G Pat Connaughton, MIL 2030 1st-round pick (Swap, less favorable of MIL/POR 2030 1st-round pick), SAC 2026 2nd-round pick, CHI 2027 2nd-round pick (via NOP, Protected 31-50), SAC 2027 2nd-round pick.

In this trade scenario, the Kings would trade DeRozan and a 2026 second-round pick in exchange for Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson from the Utah Jazz. While Sexton and Clarkson could address some of Sacramento’s guard depth, it’s unclear if adding both would fully resolve the issue.

Sexton had a strong season, averaging 18.4 points and 4.2 assists per game with shooting splits of 48.0/40.6/86.5. However, the question remains whether adding him, Clarkson, and Malik Monk to the roster would be too much.

“By trading DeRozan to New Orleans, along with some second-round picks to the Jazz, Sacramento could land two skilled guards in Clarkson and Sexton,” Siegel wrote. “These players would enhance the Kings’ offensive efficiency and provide much-needed bench depth for Perry’s revamped team.”

This four-team trade may not drastically improve any team, but it could benefit a few. The Kings are likely to seek additional guard depth in exchange for DeRozan this offseason. However, acquiring Sexton and Clarkson, both of whom are on expiring contracts for next season, could be a risky move for Sacramento.
