HUGE BOOST: The Pirates Land Another Highly Experience Dynamic Playmaker

In a significant addition to their roster, East Carolina University has landed a major commitment from veteran quarterback Mike Wright, who announced his decision Monday afternoon. Wright, who has spent time at both Vanderbilt and Mississippi State, brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and dynamic playmaking ability to a Pirates program eager to rebound in the American Athletic Conference.

The 6-foot-4 dual-threat quarterback enters Greenville with three years of SEC experience under his belt. Known for his athleticism and versatility, Wright has compiled over 2,500 career passing yards and 1,200 rushing yards across stints with the Commodores and Bulldogs. His ability to extend plays and command the offense with both his arm and legs is expected to provide an immediate upgrade to ECU’s quarterback room.

“Mike Wright is a proven competitor who has played at the highest level of college football,” ECU head coach Mike Houston said in a statement. “His leadership, experience, and skillset are going to be a tremendous asset to our team as we look to take the next step.”

Wright’s decision comes at a crucial time for the Pirates, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season that saw offensive inconsistency and instability at the quarterback position. With spring practices wrapped and fall camp on the horizon, Wright’s arrival provides clarity and optimism at the most important spot on the field.

Known for his high character and work ethic, Wright is also expected to play a mentoring role for ECU’s younger quarterbacks, helping to raise the standard in the locker room and on the field.

“This is a fresh start for me,” Wright said in a social media post. “East Carolina feels like home already, and I’m ready to give this program everything I’ve got.”

Wright will be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer and is expected to compete for the starting job right away.

With Wright now in the fold, East Carolina fans have reason to believe that brighter days are ahead — and that the Pirates may have found the spark they’ve been looking for under center.
