Breaking News: Matt Carpenter Returns to St. Louis Cardinals, Aims to Revive Team’s Glory Days

All star veteran infielder Matt Carpenter has rejoined the St. Louis Cardinals, signaling a return to the club where he built the foundation of his MLB career over 11 seasons. The agreement, finalized earlier today, reunites Carpenter with the team he helped lead to success throughout the 2010s.

Now 38, Carpenter signed for the league minimum of $740,000, with most of his salary still covered by his previous contracts with the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves. Following a short run with the Padres and a quick release by the Braves after a trade, Carpenter expressed gratitude for the chance to come back to St. Louis, saying, “I feel like I’m coming home to a great family.”

Between 2011 and 2021, Carpenter was a cornerstone of the Cardinals, earning three All-Star selections and playing key roles in several postseason runs. Over his career, he’s compiled a .260 batting average, 175 home runs, and 644 RBIs. His veteran presence and leadership are expected to be crucial as the team looks to bounce back from a tough season.

John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations, emphasized the value of Carpenter’s return, noting the team’s need for experienced leadership. “Matt’s work ethic and perseverance have always stood out, and we’re thrilled to welcome his leadership back into our clubhouse,” Mozeliak said.

Carpenter is expected to primarily serve as a designated hitter and mentor younger players. He voiced his dedication to that role, saying, “As a veteran, it’s my job to lead by example—play with professionalism, represent this organization with class, and help the young guys learn what it takes to win.”

The Cardinals are optimistic that Carpenter’s return will provide both on-field production and a cultural boost in the clubhouse. As the new season approaches, the team and its fans are hopeful that his homecoming will spark a revival at Busch Stadium.
