The Phillies received a surprising setback on Sunday when it was announced that José Alvarado has been suspended without pay for 80 games after testing positive for exogenous testosterone, a violation of MLB’s drug policy.
Making matters worse, the suspension also disqualifies him from participating in the postseason.
The team was informed of the suspension before their series finale against the Pirates and released a statement, saying:
“The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and are disappointed to hear today’s news of José’s violation.”
Alvarado’s absence is a major loss for the bullpen, as he has been one of the team’s most dependable and dominant relievers.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski likened the suspension to losing a player to injury:
“To me, I end up treating it like an injury,” he said. “You need to replace someone for 80 games, and then he’s not available for the playoffs.”
Dombrowski expressed belief that Alvarado did not intentionally violate the policy.
“I don’t think he did it knowingly, based on our conversation. But the system is strict — you’re accountable for whatever you put in your body. He was working on weight loss, something he took triggered the positive result. Still, in the end, you’re responsible.”
Alvarado was not at Citizens Bank Park and did not comment on the situation. In 20 appearances this season, he had a 4-1 record with a 2.70 ERA. He will be eligible to return on August 19 against the Mariners.
