GOOD NEWS: Texas Tech Confirms Super Intriguing Update Regarding Darrion Williams

While it’s still unclear where Texas Tech forward  will play next season, his decision regarding the 2024 NBA Draft has shed some light on his future. Multiple outlets, including college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, reported that Williams has opted to return to the college game after a disappointing showing at the NBA Draft Combine. Though he performed well in individual drills, he struggled to make an impact during live scrimmages, which likely influenced his decision.

His return to college basketball makes financial sense. As a potential second-round pick, he wasn’t guaranteed a contract in the NBA, while in the NCAA he can earn more through NIL opportunities. Despite his versatility and clutch performances, NBA scouts remain lukewarm on his professional upside due to a lack of elite athleticism and inconsistent perimeter shooting—both key attributes valued at the next level.

Now, Williams must choose whether to return to Texas Tech or take his talents elsewhere, as he also entered the transfer portal following the end of the Red Raiders’ season. A return to Lubbock, however, appears unlikely. Texas Tech recently landed Washington State transfer LeJuan Watts, a player with a nearly identical skill set who is younger and has more remaining eligibility. With both players filling similar roles, it’s questionable whether there’s room for both on the same roster, especially with Tech needing to prioritize a playmaking point guard.

The biggest concern for Texas Tech fans now is where Williams will land. Programs like BYU and Kansas in the Big 12 have already been floated as possible destinations, along with Big Ten contender Ohio State. While Red Raider fans would hate to see Williams suit up for a conference rival, that scenario is now firmly on the table as he prepares for one more year in college basketball.
