Former Phillies fan favorite has officially retired from professional baseball, as announced by his agency, CAA Sports, on Instagram Wednesday.
He played for the Phillies from 2019 to 2022, joining the team through a trade with the Mariners involving J.P. Crawford. He concluded his time in Philadelphia with his first and only postseason appearance.
Beloved by fans, Jean Segura became a staple in the lineup over four largely productive seasons. He batted .281 with a .755 OPS while playing solid defense at second base.
His legacy in Philadelphia was cemented during the 2022 postseason—not necessarily for his overall stats, but for his clutch performances during the team’s magical playoff run. In Game 3 of the NLCS, he delivered a memorable all-around performance. His most iconic moment came in the Wild Card Series opener, when he sparked a comeback with a two-run single in the ninth inning, helping the Phillies to a crucial win in his playoff debut.

Despite his heroics, it was clear by the second half of the 2022 season that Segura’s time with the Phillies was nearing its end, especially as the team was expected to pursue a high-profile shortstop in free agency. That turned out to be Trea Turner. Segura moved on to Miami in 2023, but his time there was brief and disappointing. He was traded to Cleveland, who released him soon after. In late 2024, he signed a minor-league deal with the Orioles but struggled in Triple-A.
Segura’s final chapter came with a flourish, as he led Leones del Escogido to a Dominican Winter League title, capping it off with a four-hit performance in Game 7.
A two-time All-Star (2013 with the Brewers and 2018 with the Mariners), Segura’s peak came in 2016 with the Diamondbacks, when he posted a 6.6 WAR season and surpassed 200 hits—a highlight of his 1,545-hit career.
