SAD NEWS: Vikings’ Officially Cut $9.5 Million Starter In Huge Roster Shake-Up

Blake Brandel has been a member of the Minnesota Vikings for the past four seasons, appearing in 56 games during that span.

A sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Brandel came out of Oregon State where he started 48 straight games and was named second-team All-Pac-12 in 2019. He became a full-time starter for the Vikings in 2024, but following a series of offseason acquisitions, some analysts think his tenure in Minnesota could soon be over.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently highlighted each NFL team’s top candidate for release, and for the Vikings, he pointed to Brandel.

“Brandel started all 17 games for Minnesota last season after spending his rookie year on the practice squad and serving as a backup in the following seasons,” Knox wrote on May 16. “But his starting role is now in jeopardy. The team brought in Will Fries during free agency and drafted Donovan Jackson in the first round, likely pushing Brandel into a reserve role. Releasing him would save the Vikings $1.6 million.”

Reflecting on Brandel’s Career in Minnesota

Brandel’s early years with the Vikings were marked by practice squad stints and roster fluctuations. He debuted in the NFL in 2021, playing in 13 games mostly as a reserve and special teams contributor. His steady play eventually earned him more consistent snaps.

In 2022, he filled in at left tackle for three games during Christian Darrisaw’s injury absence and performed well before landing on injured reserve himself. In March 2024, the Vikings demonstrated their appreciation for his versatility by signing him to a three-year, $9.5 million deal.

By the end of 2024, Brandel had started 22 games for the Vikings, logging 1,117 snaps at left guard and allowing seven sacks, seven quarterback hits, and 27 hurries, according to Pro Football Focus. He also logged playing time at left tackle and right guard, showcasing his value as a flexible offensive lineman. However, with the team’s recent moves, his future is uncertain.

Vikings’ Offensive Line Plans for 2025

Minnesota has been aggressive in upgrading its offensive line ahead of the 2025 season, aiming to better protect rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy. One of their major offseason moves was signing guard Will Fries to a five-year, $88 million contract. Fries, formerly of the Colts, is expected to be the starting right guard.

In addition, the Vikings used their first-round pick on Ohio State guard Donovan Jackson, who is likely to take over at left guard.

While Brandel’s versatility is valuable, the influx of talent at his position has put his roster spot in jeopardy. Minnesota might still decide to keep him for depth, but trimming the roster elsewhere may also be under consideration. Time will tell how the situation unfolds.
