Major Update: Cubs’ IL move sets up intriguing roster decision

The Chicago Cubs announced that veteran star has been placed on the injured list with an oblique strain. In a corresponding roster move, the team called up veteran catcher.

Although top prospect Moisés Ballesteros appeared to be a likely option for the promotion after a recent demotion, the Cubs ultimately chose to go with top prospect.

Top star, 30, brings major league experience to the roster and will provide depth behind the plate in Amaya’s absence. Keeping Ballesteros in the minors allows him more time for development, though he remains a candidate for a return to the big leagues later this season.

He last played in the majors in 2024 with the Boston Red Sox and originally debuted in 2018 with the Toronto Blue Jays. Known as a reliable backup, he offers steady defense and the ability to work well with pitchers.

So far, the Chicago Cubs have performed well during the 2025 season, posting a 31-21 record that puts them atop the National League Central. Despite concerns following the offseason departure of Cody Bellinger, the addition of Kyle Tucker has given fans renewed optimism.

The Cubs have emerged as legitimate contenders in a strong National League, even with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies still viewed as front-runners. If Chicago can secure the division title, they could very well make a deep run in the postseason.

The team is set to face the Reds in Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at 1:40 PM EST, in what promises to be a tightly contested NL Central matchup.

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (9) looks for a sign against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the seventh inning at Chase Field.

As for Miguel Amaya, the Cubs will provide further updates on his oblique injury in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Reese McGuire will look to step up and help fill the void left by Amaya’s absence.
