Breaking: Braves Coach Announce Another Major Infielder Signing

The Atlanta Braves have acquired an infielder from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations, as confirmed by both teams. Atlanta had an open spot on its 40-man roster following the recent designation of infielder Orlando Arcia for assignment, so no corresponding move was necessary.

Ornelas is primarily known for his defensive abilities and has experience at second base, third base, shortstop, and occasionally in center field. He made his MLB debut in 2023 and has appeared in 30 major league games, though he has only 54 plate appearances at the big-league level.

His most productive minor league season came in 2022 at the Double-A level, where he hit 14 home runs and stole 14 bases, earning a 101 wRC+. While he’s maintained decent strikeout and walk rates throughout his minor league career, his offensive production has generally been below average in recent seasons.

In his limited time in the majors, Ornelas has struggled at the plate, posting a 35 wRC+ and striking out in over 37% of his plate appearances.

Drafted by the Rangers in the third round in 2018 out of high school, Ornelas gives the Braves additional infield depth behind current backup Luke Williams. He will turn 25 soon and still has a minor league option remaining.
