It hasn’t even been a full month, but Jordan Love is already impressed with his newest offensive weapon.
When asked about Matthew Golden — the rookie wideout drafted 23rd overall in 2025 out of Texas — the Packers quarterback had high praise for the newcomer.
“In the early work we’ve done, running routes and getting reps in, he looks like a star,” Love told Packers reporter Matt Schneidman in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter). “He’s a very polished receiver, and I’m eager to see how far he can go.”
Who’s the Packers’ Top Receiver?
Despite making back-to-back playoff runs with Love under center, Green Bay hasn’t had a clear-cut No. 1 receiver.
Christian Watson has shown flashes, while Jayden Reed has led the team in both receptions and yards for two seasons straight. Romeo Doubs, meanwhile, tied for the team lead in touchdowns in 2023.
With Watson recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18 last season, Golden’s arrival could bring a much-needed spark to the receiving corps.
Across three college seasons split between Houston and Texas, Golden recorded 134 receptions, 1,975 yards, and 22 touchdowns. In 2024, he led the SEC with nine touchdown catches. Though slightly undersized at 5-foot-11 and 191 pounds, Golden made headlines at the NFL Combine with a blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash — the fastest among all wideouts.
His explosive speed and production have made him a breakout candidate, according to analysts like USA Today’s Tyler Dragon.
“As Dragon noted, the Packers haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since Davante Adams left,” he wrote. “Golden adds even more speed to the perimeter… With Reed, Golden, and a healthy Watson, Green Bay has multiple deep threats.”
Though Golden has only been with the team briefly, he’s already soaking in the Green Bay football atmosphere.
“I’m realizing just how small and tight-knit Green Bay is — people are going to recognize me,” Golden told Schneidman. “It’s a blessing to be part of a community that really supports its players. I’m happy to be here and ready to give it everything I’ve got.”

Why Was Jordan Love Speaking to Reporters?
Love made these comments during the 25th annual Charity Softball Game, which he hosted at Neuroscience Group Field in Appleton, Wisconsin.
The event raised funds for his nonprofit, Hands of 10ve, which supports youth sports, promotes mental wellness, and aims to strengthen relationships between communities and law enforcement.
In addition to hosting the charity game, Love also threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Milwaukee Brewers game against the Boston Red Sox at American Family Field.
