BIG NEWS: Mike Young Announces Super-Star Back from Injury To Strengthen Squad

Following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season, Virginia Tech forward Tobi Lawal announced his intention to test the NBA Draft waters while holding on to his college eligibility. At the time, he made it clear: his future would either be in the pros or back in Blacksburg.

On Tuesday, his decision became official—Lawal is returning to Virginia Tech.

Head coach Mike Young shared his enthusiasm about the news:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Tobi back in maroon and orange,” Young said. “He handled the draft process with maturity, focus, and a hunger to grow. The insights he gained will only help elevate his game, and we’re excited for what’s ahead—for him and for our team.”

Lawal also commented on his decision to return for another season with the Hokies:

“I’m grateful for the chance to go through the draft process and take away so much from it,” Lawal said. “It really highlighted the areas I need to sharpen—developing a more complete game, getting more reps, and embracing the challenge of guarding top opponents each night. I’m looking forward to continuing that growth with my teammates and coaches at Virginia Tech as we chase our goals.”

While his return was somewhat expected, it’s a big boost for Mike Young’s squad. Lawal, who transferred in from VCU ahead of last season, quickly emerged as the Hokies’ standout performer. The London native started 30 games, averaging 12 points and seven rebounds per contest while shooting an efficient 56% from the field.

He’ll rejoin fellow returners Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson, and Ben Hammond. They’ll be joined by transfers Izaiah Pasha, Jailen Bedford, and Amani Hansberry, along with a four-player incoming freshman class.

Virginia Tech also remains in the mix for highly regarded international prospect Neoklis Avdalas, who’s projected as a possible top-40 NBA Draft pick. Should he opt for the college route, the Hokies are considered a serious contender for his commitment.
