Breaking News: Cardinals Officially Demote Top Experienced All-Star

The St. Louis Cardinals are gearing up for a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. Having already defeated the Brewers twice this season, the Cardinals hold an early advantage in the NL Central tiebreaker scenario. Earning a series win—or even a split—would be a valuable boost for the Red Birds.

Ahead of the series, the Cardinals made several noteworthy roster changes. Outfielder Michael Siani has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis. In corresponding moves, right-hander Chris Roycroft was sent back to Memphis, and outfielder Ryan Vilade was designated for assignment. Siani has had limited playing time this year, appearing in 18 games. He’s batting .250 with a .544 OPS over 16 at-bats and has mostly been used as a defensive substitute and pinch runner. Unless he begins to contribute more offensively, that’s likely to remain his role.

Another key move was the call-up of right-handed reliever Andre Granillo, who is set to make his major league debut. Granillo has been dominant in the minors this season, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.82 ERA, 46 strikeouts, and a 0.82 WHIP over 29.2 innings. His addition could give a needed boost to the bullpen as the Cardinals aim to strengthen their position in the National League.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Cardinals could become buyers if they can string together a strong run—starting with this Brewers series and continuing against the White Sox. Sonny Gray will take the mound on Thursday, leading the rotation with a 3.35 ERA. Erik Fedde and Mathew Liberatore have also performed well, each posting sub-4.00 ERAs. Acquiring a top-tier starter might be the final piece to push the team toward a playoff berth.
