Breaking News: Red Sox Places 3B Star On MLB Bereavement List

A turbulent 2025 season has pushed the Boston Red Sox to lean on their young talent earlier than anticipated. The trio have all made their MLB debuts since Opening Day. While Campbell is currently back in the minors, he’s expected to return to Boston in the near future.

Top star and Anthony have had their ups and downs as well, but the Red Sox seem committed to giving both players more time to develop and prove their worth before considering any major roster changes. Unfortunately, the progress of one of those promising prospects has just been paused, as his season was temporarily put on hold.

Red Sox Place 3B on MLB Bereavement List

The Red Sox announced that top star has been placed on the MLB bereavement list, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. In his absence, first baseman Nick Sogard has been called up from Triple-A Worcester to fill his spot on the roster until he returns.

The bereavement list allows players to step away from the team for personal matters, such as the illness or passing of a loved one. Players placed on the list can miss anywhere from three to seven games, which means Marcelo Mayer could return as soon as Monday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds or as late as next weekend’s series against the Washington Nationals.

Boston Red Sox third baseman Marcelo Mayer (39) throws to first base for an out against the Seattle Mariners during the eighth inning at T-Mobile Park.

Before his absence was announced, Mayer was hitting .208/.262/.429 with four home runs and seven RBIs over 27 games (77 at-bats). While he’s had some growing pains, he’s also shown promise—highlighted by his first career three-hit game earlier this week against the Los Angeles Angels.

The hope is that Mayer returns refreshed and ready to contribute. Despite his limited MLB experience, his presence and offensive potential are crucial to Boston’s hopes of breaking their playoff drought this season. He remains one of the key reasons many Red Sox fans are still optimistic about the 2025 campaign.

In the meantime, the entire fanbase is sending Mayer support and well wishes during his time away.
