The Kings are actively searching for a solution at point guard.
Following the trade of Davion Mitchell last offseason and the blockbuster deal that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs during the 2024–25 season, Sacramento is now left with limited options at the ‘one.’
NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported that the Kings are seriously pursuing 31-year-old top star. Building on that, The Athletic‘s Sam Amick added that the team is also exploring other veteran options, including two major stars.
“The Kings indeed have serious interest in veteran Dennis Schröder,” Amick wrote. “That is, of course, if he doesn’t get something done with the Detroit Pistons first (league sources say he’s been in talks on that front this week). Fellow free agents Tyus Jones and Russell Westbrook are also known to be options that the Kings are considering.”
Both Westbrook and Jones recently hit the market—Westbrook declined his player option with the Denver Nuggets, and Jones entered free agency after a one-year stint with the Phoenix Suns.
Jones, 29, may be the most natural fit in Sacramento. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.3 assists per game in Phoenix last season, numbers slightly down from his previous year with the Washington Wizards, but his age and steady playstyle align well with Sacramento’s long-term vision. With the franchise continuing to build around All-Star center Domantas Sabonis and promising forward Keegan Murray, Jones could offer a more seamless blend of experience and upside than the other veteran options.
As for former MVP Russell Westbrook, the 36-year-old had a mixed tenure with the Denver Nuggets, but still posted respectable numbers—averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. While no longer the explosive star he once was, Westbrook could still provide veteran leadership and playmaking depth to a Kings backcourt in need of stability.
Both Westbrook and Tyus Jones would represent major upgrades at the point guard spot for Sacramento, especially given Malik Monk’s struggles as the primary ball-handler after the De’Aaron Fox trade. Monk, despite his offensive flashes, had difficulty maintaining control of the ball, averaging a career-high 2.4 turnovers per game—and that number spiked to 3.1 per game after Fox was dealt in February.
With that in mind, Sacramento’s pursuit of a veteran point guard is expected to be a focal point of their offseason. Free agency officially begins on June 30, and all signs point to the Kings being very active as they look to fill the leadership and playmaking void in their backcourt.
