COMMITMENT: Another Highly Rated Player Land Commitment With Duke

One of North Carolina’s top defensive players is staying close to home. KD Cotton, a rising senior at West Charlotte High School and a three-star safety in the class of 2026, committed to Duke University on Wednesday, adding another vital component to head coach Manny Diaz’s expanding in-state recruiting class.

Cotton chose Duke over North Carolina State, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Miami, and East Carolina. He paid official visits to Duke and North Carolina State earlier this summer before making his ultimate decision public at a ceremony in West Charlotte.

“It just felt like home,” Cotton remarked. “The coaching staff demonstrated affection from the beginning. I believe in the program they’re developing, and I envision a future for myself on and off the field at Duke.”

Cotton, a two-way standout for the Lions, played an important part on both sides of the ball during his junior year. Defensively, he had 77 tackles, five interceptions, and six pass breakups, establishing himself as one of the state’s best ballhawking safeties. On offense, he had 247 running yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, as well as 449 receiving yards and another 10 scores, demonstrating exceptional versatility and playmaking ability.

Cotton has served as team captain since his freshman year and is well-known for his leadership and hard ethic on and off the field. His effort was recognized not only by teammates and coaches, but also by a broad group of family, friends, and school authorities who applauded his maturity and determination.

“He’s one of the most complete players we’ve had here,” West Charlotte head coach Josh Harris stated. “He sets a good example, plays well in all three phases, and, most importantly, proudly represents this town. “Duke is getting a special young man.”

Cotton, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 175 pounds, is listed as one of the top 40 prospects in North Carolina for the 2026 class and has gotten offers from over a dozen institutions before reducing his list. His decision is another victory for Duke’s efforts to retain local talent under Diaz, who has prioritized in-state recruitment since taking over the program.

Cotton says now that he’s made his decision, he’s focused on finishing high school well and prepared to compete at the next level.

“I’m locked in now,” he declared. “I want to bring a state title to West Charlotte before I head to Durham.”

Cotton joins a solid 2026 Duke recruiting class that’s gaining traction as summer visits and pledges ramp up.
