Sunderland are actively strengthening their squad ahead of their Premier League return and could be on the verge of securing another significant addition, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.
Sunderland Building Momentum with Key Signings
After converting Enzo Le Fée’s loan from Roma into a permanent deal, the Black Cats further reinforced their midfield with the acquisition of Habib Diarra from Strasbourg. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman praised Diarra’s arrival, saying:
“Habib is an exciting talent, and we are delighted to welcome him to Sunderland AFC. At 21, he already boasts over 100 senior appearances and has captained in one of Europe’s top leagues. His quality and potential highlight both his personal promise and the club’s growing ambition.”
Sunderland are also set to add experienced left-back Reinildo, who arrives as a free agent after three seasons at Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, a move for Chelsea’s promising youngster Ishe Samuels-Smith is also being pursued to deepen options on the left flank.
In defence, Charlie Cresswell has been targeted to strengthen the backline, reflecting manager Régis Le Bris’ intention to fortify the team’s core and ensure they are defensively solid enough to remain in the top flight.
The caliber of players linked to the club has sparked growing optimism on Wearside, with Sunderland’s stature and return to the Premier League proving attractive to prospective signings.
Djordje Petrovic Deal Nearing Completion

Now, Le Bris and his recruitment team appear close to landing Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. According to Sky reporter Sacha Tavolieri, Sunderland are finalizing a deal worth around £21.5 million for the Serbian international, who is expected to sign a five-year contract.
Petrovic is set to challenge Anthony Patterson for the starting spot in goal. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, where he impressed with ten clean sheets in 31 matches and conceded 38 goals in total. Chelsea excluded him from their Club World Cup squad, indicating his desire to move on and find more consistent playing time.
Former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior previously described Petrovic as a “great goalkeeper,” and Sunderland could provide the ideal stage for the former MLS standout to revive his career and establish himself as a Premier League regular.
