The Cincinnati Reds sent top star down to Triple-A Louisville to make room for outfielder, who was activated from the injured list. This move could offer some insight into the Reds’ longer-term plans for the once-promising power hitter.
He has struggled significantly this season, and the Reds may be hoping that time in the minors will help him rediscover his swing. The former Twins prospect is slashing just .208/.234/.377 with a 60 wRC+, well below expectations.
His struggles haven’t been limited to offense—his defense has also been subpar. The 25-year-old has lost his spot at first base to Spencer Steer, and his play at third has been shaky. So far this season, Encarnacion-Strand has recorded -2 defensive runs saved (DRS) and -2 outs above average (OAA).
Reds just made a roster move that could spell the end for Christian Encarnacion-Strand

Christian Encarnacion-Strand was expected to be a key power bat in the middle of the Reds’ lineup, but instead has become more of a liability. While Cincinnati is still hopeful he can rediscover his form, there’s a real chance they consider moving on from him at this year’s trade deadline.
Despite his struggles in 2025, there would likely be interest in Encarnacion-Strand. He still has minor league options and hasn’t yet reached arbitration eligibility—traits that could make him an attractive buy-low target for teams like the Seattle Mariners or Boston Red Sox, both of whom are in the market for help at first base.
On July 12, the Reds officially activated outfielder Jake Fraley from the 10-day injured list and optioned Encarnacion-Strand to Triple-A Louisville, following their July 11 game.

The Reds also have internal options that could eventually replace Encarnacion-Strand. Top prospects Cam Collier and Sal Stewart—both capable of playing first or third base—are progressing quickly and could be ready for the big leagues by next season.
Rather than optioning Connor Joe, the Reds chose to send Encarnacion-Strand to the minors. While the front office may not be actively shopping him, it’s safe to assume he’s not untouchable, and they’d be open to offers ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
