The St. Louis Cardinals removed star third baseman Nolan Arenado from their game against the visiting Atlanta Braves on Friday night with a sprained right index finger. Arenado, who was 1-for-3 at the plate, was replaced in the seventh inning by Thomas Saggese.
While still unclear how the injury happened, it’s the same finger issue that sidelined him for two games last week during the series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
This marks another setback during a swing that has frustrated Arenado—he’s hitting just .246 with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs in 84 games so far this season.
Meanwhile, the Braves also pulled their third baseman, Austin Riley, due to lower abdominal tightness. Riley accounted for the game’s first run on a first-inning single.
Following the game, Nolan Arenado described the injury as a sprain to his right index finger. He noted that it had flared up again calling it “a little stubborn” and stated he would receive further evaluation and treatment over the next few days. Arenado expressed hope that it’s a minor setback, emphasizing his commitment to being available for the team.
This is the same finger bothering him recently, having already cost him two games last week. Injuries to digits can be nagging for hitters, especially third basemen who leverage their fingers during swings and throws.

Lineup impact: Arenado’s absence could force Thomas Saggese (or another options) into the hot corner. It might also shift offensive responsibilities onto teammates during his recovery period.Trade With July 31 approaching and Arenado still unsigned to a lucrative extension, any prolonged injury might affect his trade market—though the Cardinals have been gauging him as a possible trade candidate.
