The Texas Rangers made a roster move, announcing that they’ve traded veteran right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning to the Atlanta Braves. In return, they’re getting another right-hander, José Ruiz, along with some cash considerations.
Ruiz has had a turbulent season in 2025, bouncing back and forth between Triple-A and the Major Leagues, playing for both the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies. His time in the big leagues hasn’t gone smoothly—he pitched in 16 games for the Phillies from March through May but struggled badly, putting up a sky-high 12.88 ERA. After that rough stretch, Philadelphia designated him for assignment on June 1.
He didn’t find much better luck with the Braves, either. In June, Ruiz got two chances to start on the mound for Atlanta but only lasted two innings total. In that short span, he gave up three runs and issued three walks, which led to him being designated for assignment again on June 20. Now, he’s headed to Triple-A Round Rock as he joins the Rangers organization.
Meanwhile, Dane Dunning had a relatively solid but limited showing in the majors this season. He appeared in five relief outings for Texas, posting a 3.38 ERA. Over those 10.2 innings, he allowed four earned runs, walked five batters, and struck out 10. Although he didn’t get a decision in any of those games, his numbers were steady. In addition to his time in the majors, Dunning has also spent a good chunk of the season in Triple-A Round Rock, where he started 11 games.
Looking at his full body of work with the Rangers, Dunning has been with the club for five seasons. Over that time, he’s pitched in 122 games, earned a 26–32 win-loss record, and carried a 4.36 ERA. He’s been both a starter and a reliever for the Rangers and even played a key role during injuries to the rotation in past years.

Now, as Dunning moves on to Atlanta and Ruiz heads to the Rangers’ minor league system, the Rangers are getting ready to begin the second half of their season. They’ll return to action at home on Friday, July 18, with a game against the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., giving fans a fresh look at the reshaped roster as Texas looks to make a push down the stretch.
