Major Breaking: Cincinnati Reds Officially Demote Key Starting Pitcher

The Cincinnati Reds have assigned starting pitcher to pitch for the Triple-A Louisville Bats as he continues rehabbing from a groin injury that has lingered since early May.

Hunter Greene first felt the issue during a May 7 start in Atlanta, exiting the game while warming up for the fourth inning. He was placed on the 15-day injured list but returned after the minimum stint, starting again on May 23 against the Cubs and making one more appearance after that.

However, during his next outing against Milwaukee at Great American Ball Park, he again felt discomfort in his groin. He completed five innings and didn’t mention the issue until he returned to the dugout, prompting the Reds to quietly call in a reliever. At the time, the move seemed routine—he had thrown 85 pitches and was just coming off an injury.

The Reds placed him back on the IL and made it clear they would take a more cautious approach this time. Greene remained out of game action for over seven weeks. Six days ago, he made a brief rehab appearance in Arizona, tossing two hitless innings with a walk and four strikeouts in the Arizona Complex League.

Tonight, he’ll take the next step by facing Triple-A hitters in Omaha, where he’s scheduled to throw four innings. If he performs well and feels fine in the days following, he could rejoin the Reds’ rotation soon. However, depending on his pitch count and overall recovery, the team may opt to give him one more rehab start before bringing him back.
