Major Turn Of Events: Rangers’ Finally Finds Hope Amidst Devastating Injury Crisis Ahead of Play Off Push

The Texas Rangers got two key injury updates as they fight to stay in the American League Wild Card race. Currently 1.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card spot and 5.5 back of the division-leading Houston Astros, Texas now heads into a pivotal three-game series against Houston with notable bullpen changes.

Rangers sign veteran reliever and 6 others to minor deals

Left-hander Danny Coulombe was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 1, due to shoulder fatigue. The veteran reliever, acquired from the Twins at the July 31 trade deadline, started strong with 4 2/3 scoreless innings for Texas but has since struggled, giving up seven runs over his last 3 2/3 innings. His most recent outing on August 26 was especially rough, as he allowed three runs while recording just one out. Coulombe isn’t eligible to return until September 16.

The 35-year-old has pitched in the majors since 2014 with the Dodgers, Athletics, Orioles, Twins, and Rangers. He was excellent in 2023 with Baltimore, logging a 2.81 ERA in 61 appearances. After undergoing elbow surgery in June 2024, he returned late that season and finished with a 2.12 ERA across 33 games. Minnesota signed him to a one-year, \$3 million deal this past offseason before trading him to Texas at the deadline. Overall in 2025, he has a 4.05 ERA between the Twins and Rangers, with most of the damage coming in recent weeks in Arlington.

To replace Coulombe on the roster, the Rangers reinstated right-hander Cole Winn from the injured list. The 25-year-old former first-round pick had been sidelined since August 20 with nerve irritation in his right hand but returned after a rehab appearance, tossing a scoreless inning for Triple-A Round Rock. Before the injury, Winn was a crucial piece of Bruce Bochy’s bullpen, recording a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings with 26 strikeouts and a 1.000 WHIP in 25 relief outings this season.

His turnaround has been impressive following a rocky 2024 rookie year, when he gave up 15 runs in just 17 1/3 innings. After moving full-time to relief in 2025, Winn has emerged as one of Texas’ most trusted late-inning arms. His arsenal has played well out of the bullpen, with his slider generating a 38.1 percent whiff rate and his splitter, thrown 13 percent of the time, inducing swings and misses at a 40 percent rate, per Baseball Savant.

The timing of his return is critical. In just 18 days, the Rangers have placed nine players on the injured list, including Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Nathan Eovaldi. With Adolis García’s status still uncertain due to a Grade 2 quadriceps strain, the need for reliable bullpen depth has become even more urgent.
