The New York Giants began the 2025-26 season with a 21-6 Week 1 loss against the Washington Commanders. Quarterback Russell Wilson labored throughout the game, as the offense failed to score a single touchdown. Shortly after the game, head coach Brian Daboll had a cryptic answer regarding Wilson’s future role on the offense.
According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Daboll, 50, would not immediately confirm that Wilson will start for the Giants in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. Brian Daboll did, however, confess in his statement that he remains confident in Russell Wilson.
“Brian Daboll inquired whether Russell Wilson will be his starter next week. Says it’s straight after the game. Wilson was not responsible for this defeat. “I have confidence in Russ,” Daboll stated. “We need to improve our performance overall.”

The 36-year-old quarterback finished with 169 passing yards, completing 17 of 37 attempts. Brian Daboll and the Giants attempted to feed the ball to wide receiver Malik Nabers throughout the game, and the second-year pro got 12 targets. Unfortunately, Wilson and Nabers could not connect more frequently, as the star wideout only managed five grabs for 71 yards.

After opting to part ways with Daniel Jones, New York made adjustments at quarterback this summer. The front staff signed Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency, and rookie Jaxson Dart was selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Giants supporters are eager to see what Dart can do at center, as he represents the franchise’s future. However, it appears that they will have to wait for now.

Brian Daboll may have to answer questions about the quarterback room throughout the offseason. Especially if Russell Wilson continues to struggle, as he did on Sunday. Look for the Giants’ head coach to make a definitive choice well before the Week 2 game against Dallas.
