Breaking: Phillies manager Rob Thomson makes decision on potential Trea Turner replacement

The Philadelphia Phillies were delivered some bad news on Sunday, as Trea Turner suffered a hamstring injury that could end his season. The same day, it was confirmed that top shortstop prospect Aidan Miller would be promoted to Triple-A.

Miller is the Phillies’ second-best prospect and has been playing exceptionally well at shortstop in Double-A. The move, which coincided with Turner’s injury, fueled talk that Miller could be Turner’s successor in October.

However, with Turner’s injury returning as a Grade 1 hamstring strain, the Phillies may not need Miller this season. Ahead of the big series against the New York Mets, Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that the team has decided on Miller and a possible MLB call-up in 2025.

According to Devan Kaney of 94.1 WIP, Phillies manager Rob Thomson confirmed that the team does not plan to promote Miller to the Majors this season despite Trea Turner’s injury. Thomson explained that Miller needs to complete his development in the minors this year before the organization considers his next step.

Miller made his Triple-A debut with Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, September 9, drawing plenty of attention for multiple reasons. While Thomson and the Phillies are not preparing to call him up in 2025, a standout performance in Triple-A combined with a setback in Turner’s recovery could at least put the idea on the table.

Thomson’s phrasing leaves the door slightly open for a potential debut in 2025, but it appears unlikely. Lehigh Valley has 12 regular-season games left, and if they reach the playoffs, their run could extend to September 27. That would give Miller a small window to earn consideration for a call-up if he dominates.

The 21-year-old shortstop has impressed this year in Double-A, hitting .259 with 13 homers, 41 RBIs, 52 steals, and an .809 OPS across 405 at-bats. Now, he’ll look to carry that success into Triple-A to close out his breakout season.

Can Phillies Prospect Aidan Miller Replace Trea Turner Or Alec Bohm? Uh, Not Yet

For now, the Phillies’ plan is clear: Miller will finish the season in Triple-A. While his Major League debut in 2025 is highly improbable, his strong progress this year has boosted his chances of cracking the big-league roster in 2026. Turner remains entrenched as one of the league’s best shortstops, so Miller’s focus will be on continuing his development with Lehigh Valley as he edges closer to the Majors.
