Jordan Romano’s postseason status is very much in doubt as he remains on the injured list with right finger inflammation, sidelined for more than two weeks.
But even if he returns in time, Romano’s struggles this season may cost him a spot. The right-hander has not been a dependable option for the Phillies, leading Matt Gravel of That Ball’s Outta Here to argue that he should be left off the playoff roster altogether.
“If Romano is cleared to pitch when the postseason begins, the Phillies still need to weigh his inconsistency this year,” Gravel wrote. “He’s had too many outings where he’s given up multiple runs. Philadelphia would be better off turning to Trivino, Mayza, or Lazar instead.”
According to Gravel, Lou Trivino, Tim Mayza, and Max Lazar have all earned stronger cases to make the postseason bullpen. In his view, one of them deserves the nod over Romano — regardless of whether he’s healthy or not.
