The Baltimore Orioles have provided a roster update revealing that right-handed pitcher has accepted an outright assignment to the organization’s Florida complex. This decision comes after Blewett cleared waivers unclaimed, a week after the club designated him for assignment. In addition to that move, the Orioles reinstated catcher Adley Rutschman from the injured list, while infielder Luis Vázquez was sent to the Florida complex as the corresponding roster adjustment.

Scott Blewett, age 29, first came to Baltimore in June, when the team acquired him from the Atlanta Braves in a cash transaction. Not long after his arrival, he suffered an elbow injury that sidelined him for an extended stretch, ultimately resulting in more than two months spent on the 60-day injured list. Although he recently returned to health, the Orioles opted not to add him back to their major league roster. Because Blewett has no minor league options remaining, the club was required to expose him to waivers before sending him off the roster. Once he passed through unclaimed, the Orioles were able to assign him outright to their complex.

This is not the first time Blewett has been outrighted in his career, and under the rules, he had the ability to decline the assignment in favor of immediately testing free agency. Instead, he chose to remain with Baltimore’s system through the end of the season, though he will qualify for minor league free agency once the year concludes regardless. Across this season, Blewett has already logged a personal-best workload, throwing 44 1/3 innings while splitting time among three different organizations. His performance has been uneven, reflected in a 5.48 ERA along with an 18 percent strikeout rate. Given that track record, Blewett is expected to enter the upcoming offseason looking for opportunities via minor league contracts, where he will attempt to carve out another chance at the major league level.
