Auburn Football Latest: Former 4-star receiver announces intent to enter transfer portal

Perry Thompson, once a highly regarded 4 star prospect and a member of the Freeze Four in December 2023, has revealed that he plans to enter the transfer portal. Coming from Foley, Alabama, Thompson was considered one of the key additions in Hugh Freeze’s first full recruiting class at Auburn. However, despite his potential, he struggled to establish himself as a reliable contributor. Over two seasons with the Tigers, he totaled 22 receptions for 280 yards and scored a single touchdown, which he recorded in his debut game against Alabama A and M.

Auburn’s offensive inconsistencies in 2025 created chances for players to step up, yet Thompson was unable to fully capitalize. That season, he managed 17 catches for 154 yards, but his impact remained limited. Thompson had been part of the same signing class that delivered playmakers like Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain to the Plains. His departure now makes him the third player to enter the transfer portal following the arrival of new head coach Alex Golesh. He joins Antonio Coleman and Raion Strader as players who are choosing to move on from Auburn’s program.

Thompson’s potential was evident in his 247Sports recruiting evaluation, which highlighted his physical tools and on field traits. The report noted, “Estimated at 6 foot 3 and 200 pounds plus. Possesses a strong frame with growth potential to add additional weight to build. Three phase player that displays good athleticism in each phase of the game.”

The evaluation continued by emphasizing his physicality and versatility as an offensive weapon. “Physical prospect on the offensive side of the ball that understands how to utilize his frame and play strength as a pass catcher and as a runner in the open field. Flashes excellent leaping ability with the ability to adjust within a wide catch radius. Plays more vertical than in breaking as a route runner while showing the ability to get linear down field. Appears to exhibit good run after catch production, displaying the ability to consistently play through contact as a route runner and with the ball in his hands.”

It also pointed out areas where he needed further refinement. “Has a physical nature to him at the receiver position that is apparent when evaluating him on the defensive side of the ball and special teams. Will need to continue to improve as a pass catcher as he can sometimes let the ball get into his body and fight it at the catch point.”
