Believe it or not, Carolina’s patience with Tommy Lloyd may have just paid off in a big way 👀

As the college basketball season reaches its most intense stage, uncertainty continues to swirl around one of the sport’s most respected coaching figures. With a historic postseason run unfolding and major programs watching closely, the coming days are expected to bring clarity on a situation that could reshape the coaching landscape. The stakes are massive, not only for the program currently competing for a national title, but also for another powerhouse waiting patiently in the background for its next leader.

The head coach of the Arizona Wildcats has U of A back in the Final Four for the first time in a quarter century. With a clash of the titans on the horizon with the Michigan Wolverines in the Final Four, Lloyd could be coaching his final game at Arizona here soon. He is seen as a top candidate to come take over North Carolina.

North Carolina has been patient in its pursuit of Lloyd, and may have just saved $2 million in doing so.

With the way Lloyd’s contract with Arizona is structured, leaving for another job before April 1 would have triggered an $11 million buyout. However, that figure has now dropped to $9 million, making it slightly more affordable for a program like North Carolina to make a move. Arizona’s deep tournament run effectively delayed any immediate hiring possibility for UNC, though unexpected moves in college football—such as Lane Kiffin’s jump from Ole Miss to LSU—prove that timing can always surprise.

In a sense, Arizona’s Elite Eight victory over Purdue may have both increased Lloyd’s value and reduced the financial barrier tied to his potential departure.

It is far from certain that Lloyd will ultimately land in Chapel Hill. There remains a strong possibility he could sign a new deal with Arizona following this Final Four appearance. Still, reports suggest his working relationship with Arizona athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois has not been ideal. Combined with the university’s financial limitations—including restrictions on contract length—there are factors that could complicate a long-term commitment.

For North Carolina, the situation is straightforward: if the Tar Heels are willing to invest heavily, they have a legitimate chance to secure one of the top coaching minds in the game. While Lloyd has deep ties to the West Coast, his coaching roots trace back to Gonzaga under Mark Few. Interestingly, Few himself was once considered as a potential successor to Roy Williams at UNC before choosing to remain in Spokane.

Looking ahead, the timeline is clear. Once Arizona’s tournament run concludes, a decision will follow. Lloyd will either remain in Tucson or make the move to the ACC. If he chooses the latter, it would be a major win for North Carolina. If not, the program could shift its focus to another high-profile option in Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan.

For now, North Carolina can take some comfort in one thing: patience has already paid off, with Lloyd’s buyout now $2 million lower than it once was.
