The Auburn basketball world lit up after program icon Charles Barkley delivered an emphatic defense of young guard Tahaad Pettiford in the aftermath of the Tigers’ disappointing loss in the SEC Tournament.
Barkley, one of the most celebrated figures in Auburn athletics history, didn’t mince words when responding to the backlash aimed at Pettiford. Speaking shortly after the game, he voiced frustration over what he viewed as harsh and misplaced criticism toward a player who has shouldered a heavy burden for Auburn Tigers men’s basketball throughout the season.
“What’s being said about this kid is unfair,” Barkley said. “People are acting like he didn’t pour everything he had into that game. He’s young, he’s still learning, and he competes every single night for Auburn.”
Those comments followed Auburn’s 72–62 defeat to Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball, a result that cut short the Tigers’ hopes of a deeper postseason push. Auburn appeared in control early, leading at halftime and maintaining momentum midway through the second half, before Tennessee flipped the script with suffocating defense and a decisive scoring run.

“How can you tear down a young player who’s giving everything he has?” Barkley said. “He’s not trying to fail. He’s trying to win games for Auburn.”
