Auburn football is set to welcome back a defensive force. Xavier Atkins, the Tigers’ first All-American linebacker in over 20 years, announced Wednesday that he will return to Auburn for the 2026 season. Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Atkins wrote: “Let’s run it back #WDE.”
Atkins, not yet eligible for the NFL Draft, had every reason to explore other options after a coaching change and his standout 2025 campaign. However, he confirmed he will stay, providing a major boost to Auburn’s defense.
The linebacker led the Tigers in tackles in 2025, registering 84 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss—the most ever by an Auburn inside linebacker—and nine sacks. His performance earned him First Team All-SEC honors and All-America recognition from the Walter Camp Foundation, the AFCA, and the FWAA.
Auburn also retained defensive coordinator and linebackers coach DJ Durkin, a key figure in Atkins’ development. While he is the first major contributor to announce his return for 2026, 15 players are expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens Jan. 2, including starting cornerback Jay Crawford.
Atkins’ decision ensures that Auburn keeps one of college football’s premier defensive talents for another season, setting the stage for a high-powered 2026 campaign.
