BREAKING: Auburn Gets Major Boost as Key Starter Reconsiders Transfer Decision, Set to Take His Reins for the 2026 Season

Auburn football has received a major offseason lift as starting left tackle Xavier Chaplin has reversed course on his transfer plans and is now set to return for the 2026 season, according to reports. The decision secures a proven starter at one of the most critical positions on the field and provides much-needed continuity for the Tigers as they move forward under new leadership.

Chaplin started all 12 games at left tackle during the 2025 season and will enter 2026 with one year of eligibility remaining. At 6-foot-7, the redshirt junior brings size, experience, and leadership to an offensive line that faced inconsistency last season and significant roster turnover this offseason.

A native of South Carolina, Chaplin began his collegiate career at Virginia Tech, where he spent three seasons. After redshirting in 2022, he emerged as a dependable starter for the Hokies in 2023 and 2024, making 25 starts and earning All-ACC honorable mention recognition along with third-team All-American honors. He transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2025 campaign and quickly claimed the starting left tackle role.

While Auburn’s offense struggled at times, Chaplin remained a constant presence on the line. He delivered strong pass-blocking performances in several games and played a key role in protecting the quarterback throughout the season. Though penalties and overall line play were issues, his experience and durability stood out on a unit that frequently rotated personnel.

Chaplin’s return comes at a pivotal moment for Auburn. The Tigers have lost multiple offensive linemen to graduation, and others have explored transfer options, creating uncertainty up front. Retaining a veteran starter at left tackle gives Auburn a foundational piece to build around as it prepares for spring practices and the 2026 season.

For new head coach Alex Golesh, Chaplin’s decision represents an important step in stabilizing the offense. With a reliable blindside protector set to “take the reins” once again, Auburn can now focus on developing depth, improving cohesion, and addressing other needs as the program looks to take a step forward next season.
