Auburn is actively searching for a new head coach to replace Hugh Freeze, who was dismissed several weeks ago, and the program now seems to have a clear idea of when a decision will be finalized. Long viewed as a sleeping giant within the SEC, the Tigers are widely believed to be just one strong coaching hire away from reclaiming a spot among the league’s elite. Thanks to substantial financial backing from influential boosters and consistently solid recruiting classes—even during seasons when the on-field results fall short—Auburn remains an attractive landing spot for potential candidates.
Although Lane Kiffin’s name was initially floated during this cycle, Auburn is avoiding involvement in what has become a chaotic coaching saga surrounding the Ole Miss head coach. However, like several other programs still without a hire, Auburn remains indirectly affected by how the Kiffin situation unfolds, as the outcome could shift other openings. In the meantime, Auburn has continued to evaluate its own list of targets. Chris Vannini of The Athletic has reported that Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is among the contenders, though his situation is intertwined with the possibility of the Florida job becoming available should Kiffin decline that position.

Auburn’s search extends beyond Sumrall, with additional candidates such as Clark Lea of Vanderbilt firmly in consideration. The school is aiming to announce its new coach shortly after the Iron Bowl matchup with Alabama concludes. As Vannini explained, “Auburn has long planned to name a coach the day after Saturday’s Iron Bowl. If not Sumrall, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key and Lea could be options, as well as current interim head coach D.J. Durkin, who has support.” This timeline underscores the urgency Auburn feels to stabilize the program heading into the offseason, especially with the transfer portal and recruiting deadlines rapidly approaching.

The outcome of the Iron Bowl itself may factor into Auburn’s final decision. Should the Tigers manage to defeat Alabama, interim coach D.J. Durkin could bolster his chances of securing the permanent job, gaining momentum at the perfect moment. Still, beating the Crimson Tide will be a difficult task, especially since Alabama must win to keep its playoff hopes alive. Regardless of the game’s outcome, Auburn is expected to move swiftly. Even if the official hire is not announced immediately after the Iron Bowl, it is anticipated to follow soon afterward as the program aims to regain stability and position itself for a return to SEC prominence.
