As the transfer portal continues to reshape college basketball rosters, familiar recruiting storylines are beginning to circle back in unexpected ways. One such case involves a former top target who once had strong ties to Kentucky but ultimately chose a different path. Now, with roster movement heating up and decisions looming, there’s renewed intrigue about whether those old connections could lead to a reunion in Lexington.
Remember Eric Reibe? He was once a priority recruit for Mark Pope and Kentucky coming out of high school. However, as the Wildcats intensified their pursuit of Malachi Moreno, Reibe opted to sign with Dan Hurley and UConn Huskies men’s basketball instead. In the end, both decisions worked out well — Moreno went on to earn SEC All-Freshman honors at Kentucky, while Reibe contributed to UConn’s run to the Final Four.
Now, the possibility of those paths crossing again is becoming more realistic. Moreno is expected to return to Lexington if he ultimately withdraws from the NBA Draft, and there’s growing curiosity about whether Reibe could join him. Pope wasted little time reestablishing contact with the 7-foot-1 center after he entered the transfer portal earlier this week, following just one season in Storrs.

During his freshman campaign, Reibe averaged 5.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while making five starts. Though his role was somewhat limited, his upside remains clear, and he appears eager to explore new opportunities. As one report noted, “This one is brand new, and more schools are certain to inquire with an attempt to jump in,” Shaw wrote.
There are already encouraging signs for Kentucky. A source close to the situation told KSR’s Jacob Polacheck that conversations between Reibe and the Wildcats were positive, noting that Pope was “super classy” when Reibe originally chose UConn — something that is “going a long way now.”
Reibe himself has previously spoken highly of Pope and the program’s approach to recruiting him.
“I really like Coach (Mark) Pope and how he contacts me,” Reibe said of Kentucky. “He calls me like every single day, and with him being a big man, he knows how I feel and how I think on and off the court. I think he could be a good mentor for me. They see me as a shooter in their system. They like how I run the floor and that I can take early threes and play inside out, handoffs, and making the passes.”

Reibe became the first UConn player to enter the transfer portal following the team’s loss in the national championship game this week. One of his standout performances came earlier in the season, when he posted 15 points and two blocks in a tightly contested 71-67 loss to Arizona — a matchup between teams that would later emerge as Final Four contenders.
With Kentucky actively evaluating its frontcourt options, the idea of pairing the former McDonald’s All-American with Moreno is at least on the table. For now, Pope and his staff are doing their due diligence, but the possibility of Reibe landing in Lexington is one worth watching closely.
